How Much Do Marble Countertops Cost in 2026?
Updated October 23, 2026 · Enchanted Kitchens, Stamford, CT
Quick answer
The cost of marble countertops depends mostly on the slab you choose, then on how much stone your kitchen uses, the thickness, the edge and the cutouts. Marble has entry, middle and premium levels, so two kitchens the same size can be thousands of dollars apart only because of the slab. A good quote is all-inclusive (stone, templating, fabrication, edge, cutouts, delivery, installation and sealing), with removal of the old countertops listed separately. What the price includes
A complete marble quote should be all-inclusive: the marble slab, templating, fabrication, your edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts in the stone, delivery, installation and sealing. Removing and disposing of your old countertops is a separate line. We do not do plumbing or electrical work, so reconnecting a sink or cooktop is done by your plumber or electrician.

What moves the price up or down
The slab itself
This is the biggest factor. Within marble there are entry, middle and premium levels. Carrara is usually the most accessible Italian marble. Calacatta and Statuario, with their bright white background and bold veining, sit at the premium end, and rare or exotic slabs can cost more than any range you see online. Two kitchens of the same size can be thousands apart only because of the slab.
How much stone your kitchen uses
Countertops are priced by the square foot, but the quote is based on the slab consumed, not only the surface you see. An island, a full-height backsplash or careful vein matching uses more stone. We explain this in detail in our guide to slab yield.
Thickness
3 cm (about 1 1/4 inch) is the common thickness for kitchen counters in our area. 2 cm is often used in bathrooms, or with a built-up edge that makes it look thicker. Thicker stone means more material, so it affects the price.
Edge profile
A simple eased edge costs the least. Ogee, bullnose and especially mitered edges take more shop time and add to the total.
Cutouts and details
Each sink and cooktop cutout, an undermount sink, a waterfall end or an outlet cutout in a backsplash adds fabrication work.
Removing the old countertops
Taking out and disposing of your existing countertops is a separate charge. Concrete, tile or thick old stone takes more work to remove than laminate.
Why marble costs more in the Northeast
- Most marble is imported, much of it from Italy, so freight and the cost of keeping slabs in stock nearby are part of the price.
- Labor costs in Fairfield County and Westchester are higher than in much of the country, which is why national price charts often look low for our area.
- Local slab supply matters. When the exact slab you want is in stock nearby, there is less shipping and less waiting.
- A fabricator that cuts in-house avoids paying a separate shop, which keeps the price and the schedule tighter.

Is marble the right stone for you?
Marble is soft compared with granite and quartzite. It will etch where acids touch it and it develops a patina over the years, which many people love. If you want the look with less care, compare it with quartzite or a marble-look quartz in our honest guide to the four stones.

Frequently asked questions
How much do marble countertops cost per square foot?
It depends on the slab level, the thickness, the edge and how much stone your layout uses, so any single number online is a guess. Our free estimator gives you a ballpark range for your kitchen in about a minute, and after we measure you get one all-inclusive price in writing.
Is marble more expensive than quartz or granite?
Often, but not always. Marble usually starts higher than granite and most quartz, but every material has entry and premium options, so a premium quartz or an exotic granite can cost more than a simple marble. The slab matters more than the material name.
Is Carrara marble cheaper than Calacatta?
Usually, yes. Carrara has a softer gray background and finer veining and tends to be the most accessible Italian marble. Calacatta and Statuario are brighter and more dramatic, are less common, and are priced higher.
Why can the final price be higher than the estimate?
An estimate is based on a price level. If you fall in love with a rarer slab, choose a more detailed edge or add a backsplash, the price can go up, even above the range. That is why we confirm one all-inclusive price in writing after we measure, before any stone is cut.
Is marble worth it in a kitchen?
If you love the look and accept that it will etch and patina over time, yes. Marble needs sealing from time to time and quick cleanup of lemon, wine and coffee. If you want the look with less care, ask about quartzite or a marble-look quartz.
